How to care for Vegetable-Tanned Leather

Vegetable-tanned leather with an aniline finish is designed to retain its natural surface character, so it benefits from gentle care rather than frequent cleaning. Its more open finish also means it can be more sensitive to moisture, oils and staining than heavily pigmented leather.

Everyday care Wipe away dust and light dirt with a clean, soft, dry cloth. If needed, use a cloth that is only slightly damp and clean gently across the surface rather than concentrating on one small area.

If the leather becomes wet Blot away excess moisture without rubbing, then allow the leather to dry naturally at room temperature. Keep it away from radiators, hairdryers, direct heat and strong sunlight while drying.

Conditioning Use a conditioner specifically suitable for aniline or vegetable-tanned leather, and apply it sparingly. Always test first on a discreet area, as more absorbent leather can darken when conditioned.

What to avoid Avoid soaking the leather, alcohol wipes, household cleaners, harsh chemicals and aggressive rubbing. Do not apply heavy waxes, oils or polishes unless they are specifically recommended for aniline leather, as they may permanently alter the colour or natural finish.

Good to know Vegetable-tanned leather naturally develops a patina with use. Slight darkening, tonal changes, soft creases and small marks are part of the way the material ages and become part of its individual character over time.
